My First Time release infectious single, “Workwear”

Bristol’s rising indie stars, My First Time, are riding high on their ascent with the release of their latest single, “Workwear.”

This marks their second release under Submarine Cat Records, following the success of their debut single, “Wind Up Merchant,” in October 2023.

Known for their driving guitar hooks and sharp, tongue-in-cheek lyricism, My First Time crafts three-minute post-pop nuggets that offer a unique perspective on modern society. Their sound has garnered praise from renowned publications like CLASH Magazine, describing it as a “taut, witty piece of indie rock” that is “ludicrously infectious.”

The quartet has built a reputation for their energetic live performances, with sold-out headline dates in Bristol and sharing stages with notable bands such as The Last Dinner Party, Picture Parlour, English Teacher, and Lip Filler. Their youthful charm has also caught the attention of industry influencers, including Matt Wilkinson (Apple Music 1), Steve Lamacq, Amy Lamé (BBC 6 Music), John Kennedy (Radio X), and James Threlfall (BBC Introducing).

“Workwear” delves into the societal trappings of consumerism today’s youth face. The song cleverly adopts the voices of three distinct characters – ‘the overspender,’ ‘the worried mother,’ and the ‘marketing executive.’ Amidst wiry guitar refrains and lively percussion, vocalist Isaac Stroud-Allen delivers sharp-witted, fresh-faced quips with infectious enthusiasm.

The band explained the inspiration behind the track: “‘Workwear’ focuses on the bizarre effect a few words or logo on a piece of clothing can have on people’s behaviour. Overconsumption, consumerism, relentless advertising, and body dysmorphia are constant companions for our generation.”

Despite maintaining a low profile on social media and not releasing music until late 2023, My First Time quickly gained traction through word of mouth. Their demos were featured on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music, and early local headline shows sold out, with one dedicated fan even getting the band’s logo tattooed on their leg.

Catch My First Time live on the following dates:

  • Feb. 11: George Tavern, London
  • Feb. 15: The Social, London
  • Mar. 27: Strange Brew, Bristol
  • Apr. 13: Outer Town Festival, Bristol

My First Time’s “Workwear” is out now on Submarine Cat Records.
