In a nostalgic nod to the past, Queen fans will be treated to a rare gem from the iconic band’s repertoire.

“Cool Cat,” a hidden B-side from Queen’s experimental and funky Hot Space album released over 40 years ago, will finally see the light of day as a single. The limited edition 7” pink vinyl is scheduled for an exclusive release on Record Store Day, Apr. 20th, accompanied by a never-before-heard instrumental version as a bonus B-side.

The track, penned and performed solely by Freddie Mercury and John Deacon, has gained renewed attention due to its recent use in an Amazon Prime promotional spot titled “‘Tache.” Directed by actress and filmmaker Olivia Wilde, the 30-second short has garnered over 25 million views on YouTube. The spot features a young actress, Morgan Quin, finding inspiration in Freddie Mercury’s individuality to embrace her uniqueness.

Public demand for “Cool Cat” has surged, making it one of the four Hot Space tracks that Queen never performed live. The song’s upbeat and unique sound has resonated with audiences, evidenced by the overwhelmingly positive response to the Amazon Prime promotion.

The track is noteworthy for its belated release and the fact that John Deacon played every instrument on “Cool Cat,” with Freddie Mercury accompanying on the electric piano and delivering an extraordinary falsetto performance, marking the only song he sang entirely in falsetto. The recording showcases the duo’s musical prowess and Freddie’s unparalleled vocal range.

Initially released in 1982 as the B-side to “Las Palabras De Amor,” both tracks feature on Queen’s Gold-certified Hot Space album. A fun fact for fans: the song initially included a guest backing vocal by David Bowie, which was ultimately scratched before the album’s release.

The upcoming release of “Cool Cat” on a limited edition 7” pink vinyl, with the additional treat of a never-before-heard instrumental mix, will surely delight Queen enthusiasts and vinyl collectors alike. As the anticipation builds, fans can mark their calendars for Record Store Day on Apr. 20th and stay updated on the release here. Get ready to experience a piece of Queen history that’s been waiting in the shadows for over four decades.
