iDKHOW – Gloom Division (Review)

Following a hiatus of over three years since their debut album, Razzmatazz, I DON’T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME (iDKHOW) makes a triumphant return with their sophomore effort, Gloom Division.

Dallon Weekes, the visionary force behind the project, once again showcases his prowess in crafting infectious melodies paired with enigmatic lyrics. Weekes weaves a tale of hidden violence beneath a veneer of innocence, skillfully blending profound lyrics with delightful melodies using synths, brass, percussion, and his distinctive basslines.

In Gloom Division, Weekes explores diverse vocal styles, particularly evident in the album’s lead, “DOWNSIDE,” where he delves into a deeper tonal range. Long-time fans will appreciate “A Letter,” a track that has become a favorite among live audiences, transforming concert-goers into harmonious choirs.

iDKHOW’s latest single release, “INFATUATION,”only came out a month ago.

“SATANIC PANIC” kicks off with a funky brass introduction and an animated bassline, setting the stage for lively sing-alongs during energetic concerts. Weekes’ whispered verses build up to a dynamic chorus, while “SPKOFTHDVL” exudes an old-school rock vibe with an irresistible guitar riff.

The penultimate track, “SUNNYSIDE,” exudes energy, encapsulating an existential fear of seizing the moment. Co-written with Will Joseph Cook, the song encourages confronting life’s uncertainties with bravery. The album thrives on collaboration, as Weekes shares works-in-progress, leading to unexpected creative paths while preserving iDKHOW’s unique sound.

Despite external influences, the songs on Gloom Division maintain iDKHOW’s essence, from tender moments to anthemic heights. Weekes’ creative unpredictability shines through, solidifying this second album as a mature and captivating addition to the band’s discography. The anticipation for Gloom Division is entirely justified, promising to propel iDKHOW to new heights.
